Ontario Math Proficiency Test: What to Study and How to Prepare
Preparing for the Ontario Math Proficiency Test (MPT) can feel overwhelming—especially if you have never enjoyed mathematics, have not studied it for years or experience mathematics anxiety.
The good news is that you do not have to be naturally confident in mathematics to pass. With clear explanations, structured preparation and regular practice, you can rebuild your skills step by step.
The MPT is developed, administered and evaluated by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). Passing the test is a certification requirement for most applicants to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).
The test has two sections:
Mathematics based on the Ontario curriculum for Grades 3–9
Mathematics pedagogy
You must achieve at least 70% in each section. A high mathematics mark cannot compensate for an unsuccessful pedagogy result. Ontario College of Teachers
Important Ontario MPT Mathematics Topics
Number Skills
Practise:
fractions, decimals and percentages
order of operations
integers, exponents and square roots
mental mathematics and estimation
calculator and non-calculator questions
Watch for place-value errors, negative signs and questions asking for the original amount rather than the final amount.
Ratios and Proportional Reasoning
Prepare for:
ratios and equivalent ratios
unit rates
scale drawings and maps
speed, distance and time
percentage increases and decreases
best-value questions
Always check the units and decide whether the relationship is genuinely proportional before calculating.
Algebra and Linear Relationships
Review:
algebraic expressions
solving equations
substituting values into formulas
patterns and variables
tables, graphs and linear relationships
Read the scale on each graph carefully and watch for negative values.
Geometry and Measurement
Important topics include:
perimeter, area and volume
triangles, trapezoids and composite shapes
circles
angles
the Pythagorean theorem
measurement conversions
Remember that perimeter, area and volume require different methods and units. Write down the correct formula before inserting the measurements.
Data and Probability
Practise:
interpreting tables, charts and graphs
mean, median, mode and range
probability
comparing data
identifying misleading graphs
Check the graph’s scale before answering. Do not assume that every axis begins at zero.
Financial Literacy
The Ontario mathematics curriculum includes financial literacy. Revise discounts, tax, interest, budgets, wages, unit prices and percentage change. Ontario mathematics curriculum
Do Not Forget MPT Pedagogy
The pedagogy section may include:
assessment for, as and of learning
descriptive feedback
differentiated instruction
accommodations and modifications
supporting diverse learners
identifying mathematical misconceptions
selecting appropriate teaching strategies
Look for the answer that best develops student understanding. The quickest response is not always the strongest teaching strategy.
What to Watch Out For
Common mistakes include:
rushing through the wording
overlooking units
selecting the wrong formula
relying too heavily on a calculator
spending too long on one question
preparing for mathematics but neglecting pedagogy
completing questions without reviewing mistakes
Effective Ontario MPT preparation should include learning the method, practising it and then checking why any incorrect answers were wrong.
What If You Have Always Struggled With Mathematics?
Many teacher candidates tell me:
“I have never been good at maths.”
“I panic when I see numbers.”
“I have maths anxiety.”
“I haven’t studied maths for years.”
“I don’t know where to begin.”
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.
Mathematics anxiety does not mean that you cannot pass the EQAO MPT. It often means that you need concepts explained slowly, clearly and without assumptions about what you already know.
I can help you rebuild your understanding from the foundations. My approach breaks difficult topics into manageable steps, allowing you to practise each skill and gradually improve your confidence.
